Before & After of a magical mudroom renovation. This mudroom, which was part of a larger home project, got A LOT OF ATTENTION and GOT A LOT MORE FUNCTIONAL!!!
The image below is the before, and is typically what we see, even in some new builds. Four walls and a closet…..and yet it could be soooo much more!!
BEFORE

Here’s how we redesigned this nonplus, low-functioning, basic room into a high-worth, super functional space for a busy family with pets.
AFTER – A Functional Mudroom Makeover for Everyday Living

Smart Mudroom Storage Solutions for Busy Families
We packed so much storage and function into this small space, using custom mudroom solutions, that it’s hard to imagine how they ever made it work before the redesign.
- Cubbies for each kid, to learn how to stay organized. No more fighting about shoes touching other shoes, or mittens touching other mittens, haha.
- Hooks for book bags and coats, and a clutter-free mudroom for everyday living
- A bench to sit and get dressed for the little ones
- Cabinet storage to the ceiling with lift-up doors for out-of-season clothing and sports equipment storage.
- A tall cabinet at the end for overflow sweaters, winter wear, etc.
- Open shelving for ball caps, gloves, overflow shoes, mittens, etc.
- A base cabinet at the very end has a pullout with 2 containers; one for dog food and one for cat food.
- Even squeezed in a cozy bed for the dog napping spot – but the cat loves it too haha
- A new playful patterned tile was selected and coordinated for the following reasons;
-It’s a great foil for dirt if you can’t clean it everyday
-It infuses a European aesthetic the clients love
-It’s great for the walls around the pet bed for easy cleaning
-The tiles lighten up what could have been a dark hole for the pet bed, and create another
focal point.
This layout is ideal for small mudroom makeovers with limited space.

It’s truly the kids’ mudroom with their portraits framed and displayed above the wainscoting.

The original full-size pocket door, when closed, was getting mangled by Jax clawing and scratching at it, not wanting to be isolated. My solution? I designed a custom sturdy gate so he could still be part of the action and see his ‘hoo-mans’. Dog bone cutouts in the thick frame serve as handles to open and close the gate.

As the cabinetry was getting installed, Jax wasted no time claiming his spot. The cat will have to fend for itself, haha!
