THE GREEN ROOM – PART 4 DARK & MOODY GREEN IN INTERIOR DESIGN

THE GREEN ROOM – PART 4 DARK & MOODY GREEN IN INTERIOR DESIGN

Welcome to the final installment of this 4-part series on all things green in interior design and décor. This DARK & MOODY Green in Interior Design post is sure to get you thinking about hibernating in a cozy darker room.

When the weather turns cooler, I think we all start thinking about cocooning and sweater weather.

Now that the garden beds are put to rest, and beautiful flower displays have reached their end, it’s time to start thinking about your next home interior project.

Which brings us to the final green colour palette to explore: DARK & MOODY GREEN.  The kind that envelops you when you walk into the room, making it feel extra cozy, or sexy, or glamorous.

Then there are the ones that make you want to curl up with a blanket, tuck your legs under, and binge-watch Netflix, or dive into a good book, or just disappear from the world for a bit.

While some of these green colours are on the darker side of the palette, they have a quality about them that invites quiet contemplating, whispers quiet luxury, and some would even say have a little bit of glamour and sexiness.

Current design trends are still leaning heavily towards green with the ethos that ‘Green is the New Black’.

IN YOUR HOME

Green shades are still going strong in everything interior design.

DARK & MOODY Greens can soothe and reduce stress. The high level of saturation and lack of brightness is what envelop you when you walk into the room, making it feel extra cozy.

They are always mid to dark tones and range in undertones.

  • Yellow undertones – think olive
  • Blue undertones – think deep emerald
  • Neutral undertones – think earthy, mossy green

While they are on the darker side of the palette, most have a quality about them that evokes serenity, contemplation, and even quiet luxury.

GREEN REPRESENTS CONNECTION

Connection to ourselves, to the quiet moments in our lives, and to nature itself.

GREEN FOR THERAPEUTIC EFFECT – backed by science

  • Slows human metabolism and produces a calming effect
  • Considered beneficial to the mind and body
  • Gives us a sense of serenity and calm

Think ‘The Green Room’ for TV shows. Green rooms are painted green to help calm and ease guests’ anxiety.

HOW DARK & MOODY GREENS MAKE YOU FEEL

-Convey a sense of nostalgia and desire for introspection.

  • Convey a sense of nostalgia and desire for introspection, contemplation
  • Create a subdued atmosphere
  • Considered part of the Dark Academia decor trend

HOW BEST TO EXPERIENCE Dark & Moody Greens in your Home

To feel the full impact of some of these dark & moody green colours it is best experienced again in large swaths of colour, like colour-drenching, where every surface is covered in the same colour, including the ceiling.

If that’s too much of a commitment for you, then consider using a deep colour for cabinetry, say in a kitchen, bathroom, library, mudroom, or bedroom.  Paint the walls and trim the same colour for even more impact, and keep the ceiling a little lighter and brighter.

Whichever strikes your fancy, and wherever you land on the style color wheel, this collection of Dark & Moody Greens has a lot to offer for creating cozy interiors. You’ll immediately feel ‘enveloped’ when entering the room.

This 4th and final part in the series showcases the DARK & MOODY GREEN colour palette.

Looking through the palette, you might just find an unexpected shade of green you never considered before, until you see it in action in these real-life installations and images.

How To Select the Right Shade of Dark Green for Your Home

Traditional library in dark green colour, tan leather chairs, plaid custom window valances over custom roman shades. Sheridan Interiors, luxury interior designer providing custom window treatments for Ottawa, Cornwall and and surrounding areas.

The trick to getting the right shade of green is finding the right tint, tone, or shade that sparks the joy! Light & Bright, Energetic & Vibrant, Dark & Moody, or Calm?

Any colour can have the qualities listed above, so my advice is to select a colour that you love and then adjust the value of that colour to get it where you want it to be.
This is easily achieved if you want to create a custom colour; otherwise, you will need to adjust your expectations based on your supplier’s paint colour offering.

How to use Dark Green Paint Colours in Your Home

Dark & Moody green colours should be in your colour palette arsenal if you like interest and drama.  They exude warmth on a different scale, are a ‘quiet’ colour, and need little in the way of accoutrement or pops of colour.  The whole point of them is to envelop you in a cozy cocoon.   The level of saturation in these colours reduces most glare from windows or artificial lighting, unless, of course, you opt for a high-gloss high-lacquer finish.

What keeps these rooms from looking cavernous is a thoughtful, layered lighting design and a balance between dark and light in furnishings and accessories.

This colour palette is well-suited for rooms with any window orientation, and is a great option for achieving a hibernation, cocooning vibe.

**CAUTION: You must ensure you have a well-thought-out and executed layered LIGHTING DESIGN PLAN! This will ensure safety, first and foremost, as well as reduce any hesitancy when you enter the room.  This lighting design step cannot be overlooked for these rooms to feel ‘right’.
Consider automated motion lights and always include dimmers!

Here are my best picks for DARK & MOODY GREEN shades that bring on the drama and are ready to embrace you as you enter, with one or two that didn’t make the list but are still noteworthy.
